Some favourite Books on writing

This is my list of  some of my favourite books on writing to which I return again and again whenever I am stuck with my writing and need some inspiration, or just feel like I need to contact with a soulmate in writing: Dillard, Annie,  The writing life  (a beautiful meditation on life and writing) Goldberg, Natalie  Writing Down the Bones  (gets you started) Goldberg, Natalie  Wild Mind  (helps you to find your voice and writing her exercises is sooo much fun) Goldberg, Natalie,  Long Quiet Highway  (memoir, inspiring) Natalie Goldberg is just a great person. Reading her book is a bit like meeting this great person - which I once did, in real. I attended a writing workshop with her at  Ghost Ranch  in Abiquiu/New Mexico and I swear it was one of the great experiences in my life so far! Lamott, Anne,  Bird by Bird  (a book I loved to read) Burroway, Janet Writing Fiction  (lots of information, theory, exercises, a very good basic book about writing fiction, which I use again

Write an elegy

Your death happened in the middle of life. Your death happened for uncounted years every day in the middle of life. We knew we would loose you. We never talked about it. It was a certainty, lingering like a dark shadow over our heads, that death was part of you always. We never talked about it, never talked at all. Talking was not part of the family legacy. True is: Your shadow was the light of my life. True is: Back than I took shadows for light. Your shadow was dark yet colourful, compared to the rest. Your shadow was creative. You could create anything with your hands. Could fix everything with your hands. Should’ve been a creator, Should’ve been - Should’ve been - ALIVE There was never a laugh. Your shadow was not witty, Not ever. Bitter – yes Cynical – yes I took every cry for a laugh. I can forget you Not. Your legacy shaped my life and it was good to have your shadow protecting me from compromising m

A breath - in and out

What should happen next? I don’t know I suppose you have to become quiet and open enough (I want that very much ) to understand how it is meant, everything, yes, everything. I am I am I am heartbeat of my every day Bim Bim Bim the bell quotes my desire always what should happen I can not know never ever how? Hear me my desire and become quiet don’t be so loud don’t be so obnoxious what has to happen has no meaning what happens is a breath in and out thats it

Really II

Your shadow So lovable For a moment I thought I loved you Maybe I even did Still Not important really Because For a moment I thought you loved me Still I listen to a bell In my head Not important really Because peace of mind Is so far away for me Right NOW. In a Japanese garden I met you On the ground of a velvet sea Ducks sleeping Too close to touch Really.

War

I live in a society in which pretty much the only people allowed guns are the police and the military - that might sound threatening to some (for example Mr. Burroughs), but after reading what happened in Connecticut, it sure as hell feels safer to me to live in a country where a whole lot of crazy people can not easily get their hands on guns. My heart goes out to all the people there! I can not  stop thinking about it, because I always have my childrens school in mind and what it would mean if something like this would happen there. This idea alone blows my mind and I can not imagine what those poor children, parents and teachers had and have to go through. It is like war. If everybody can have a gun, war is always too close. I remember when I lived in Virginia, which was almost 20 years ago, I used to hear the noise of shots flying through the night, often. At that time Richmond was the murder capital of the US. I, the naive german adventurer, in my twenties, I never felt threaten

e.e. cummings

Not long ago I said and I did it even here, that I would not buy any new book before I had not read the 32 already gathering around my bed, waiting to be read. Well, to send that much right ahead: I did not keep my word. SURPRISE SURPRISE. But I did it for a book of poems by e.e.cummings, by nobody else, so I think I can forgive myself. I wonder how I could so far survive without a book of poems by e.e.cummings  Its true! I am not kidding! Finally there is somebody who explains to me this world through which I  have stumbled without much of an orientation for a long long time. somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence: in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me; or which i cannot touch because they are too near  His poems have a style which I never encountered before. He does exactly what, I to be frank, expect of somebody who writes poems. He finds new words or else new positions for words, we all know but have never

Daughter of an alien star

Daughter of an alien star  Darkness. No bottom to hit in order to rise again. An endless fall into nothingness searching for an embrace I grew wings black and velvety. And then I rose but not too high not too high. She would not forgive me otherwise. Good girl. I would loose her otherwise. Good girl. I rose but not too high. The land below still so small so narrow the alleys. Not high enough. I saw her sitting in a swamp everything was yellow and green and brown. Her skinny arms reached out of the muddy water into the sky. Not too high. Come back to me. Come back to me. My black wings velvet really embraced a part of the world she did not want to see. I did come back but never stayed. My black wings velvet really embraced a part of me she did not want to know. Come back to me. Come back to me. Daughter of an alien star and take off your mask. Show me the face you were meant to wear for m

Blue

A little of my resistance against life I would like to leave behind. Sunny times is what I wish for. Am I where I wanted to be? As if you’d get admiration for it! The martyr thinks about home, always about herself first, and sacrifices herself by not moving at all, not an inch, domineering people with her rigor. Rigor mortis. At the same time friends she does not have admire the blue of the light, falling in, not me. I wished we were born as brother and sister in the middle of nowhere. All beginning is always she, life wants to be my prey. Had my luck worked, there was a plan, thought up by night -           and wasnt it her insulting life?- I would be well on the way, for sure well on the way. What remains is depth, yes, - friends, that I have, admire the blue of the light falling in-, wanted, wished, würdevoll me to dive in. In my head it is thinking, the apples fall far far away from the tree, behind it

In my thoughts

In my thoughts every poem I write is for my mother who does not read who did not read who will never read not even my letters. What I write, is my love. Its fragile but not for her. What I write, is the perfect nothingness. If you stop breathing you will have lost. I swim in my anger. I swim in a glowing fire, it is energy, the source of which I do not know. It is pushing me forward. To where? In my thoughts I meet the mates of my soul. All of them have familiar faces. I do not know them, I do not know them after all. After all that longing I do not know them. Mindfully I do not look at them. My mirrored image in the desert shimmers, like an old movie in black and white. The path of possibilities ends right here, right now never in total nothingness and I keep the open questions in my arms as if they were crying babies. I can not do this without anger, but I can do it without judging. So much is possible. If

Ich will. Natürlich! Nothing is ever perfect!

May this be a morning of innocent beginning

This is another perfect poem. I read it this morning and I knew it summed everything up I want to reach in my life, with my whole existence and most of all with my writing (I am still so far away from this goal but to know in which direction to reach really is helpful).  "May this be a morning of innocent beginning, When the gift within you slips clear Of the sticky web of the personal With its hurt and its hauntings, And fixed fortress corners, A Morning when you become a pure vessel For what wants to ascend from silence, May your imagination know The grace of perfect danger, To reach beyond imitation, And the wheel of repetition, Deep into the call of all The unfinished and unsolved Until the veil of the unknown yields And something original begins To stir toward your senses And grow stronger in your heart In order to come to birth In a clean line of form, That claims from time A rhythm not yet heard, That calls space to A different shape." from
