Some favourite Books on writing

This is my list of  some of my favourite books on writing to which I return again and again whenever I am stuck with my writing and need some inspiration, or just feel like I need to contact with a soulmate in writing:

Natalie Goldberg is just a great person. Reading her book is a bit like meeting this great person - which I once did, in real. I attended a writing workshop with her at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu/New Mexico and I swear it was one of the great experiences in my life so far!
  • Lamott, Anne, Bird by Bird (a book I loved to read)
  • Burroway, Janet Writing Fiction (lots of information, theory, exercises, a very good basic book about writing fiction, which I use again and again)
  • Brande, Dorothea, Becoming a writer (this book is standard, you have to read it, if you write, me thinks)
  • Piercy, Marge, So you want to write (tips and exercises from a good and experienced writer)
  • Bernays, Anne, Painter, Pamela, What if? (lots of exercises and fun, gets you started when you want to procrastinate)
I am always on the lookout for more books on this subject. So if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Ergänzung, ca. eine Stunde später: Hier noch eine Liste mit 283 Büchern übers creative writing für jeden, der sich die Kugel geben will und den Rest seines Lebens mit Lesen verbringen möchte. Best Books on Writing

  1. I didn't like "Writing down the Bones" - but Dillard was fun, and Anne Lamott as well. Other books about writing that I like a lot?

    Making Comics, Scott McCloud:

Flugasche, Monika Maron (great novel / meditation about journalism and society):

An Exact Replica of a Figment of my Imagination, Elizabeth McCracken (it's about loss and writing about grief, and judging from the titles you've enjoyed, you will like this a lot):

If you want to write, Brenda Ueland:

On Teaching and Writing Fiction, Wallace Stegner:

Your Screenplay Sucks, William M. Akers,

    How Fiction Works, James Wood:

How to write a damn good Novel, James N. Frey:

Writing the TV Drama Series, Pamela Douglas:

    Wie Romane entstehen, Hanns-Josef Ortheil:

Aspects of the Novel, E.M. Forster:

...I also learned a lot from Manfred Pfister,

...and the Stephen King book is okay - although I don't like his style: Hildesheim, I also edited / published THIS book, and I can still recommend it:

    1. Ich weiß nicht warum, aber hier im Blog kann ich die Links nicht direkt anklicken. Komisch! Wie gut, dass ich sie auf Facebook auch habe!
